Funding, directing, and implementing projects that demonstrate on-the-ground conservation that is science-driven and collaborative by design

HEADWATERS HERITAGE INITIATIVE

Headwaters: small creeks at the uppermost end of a stream system that contribute to larger creeks and rivers.

CD5106-50.jpgIn the same way that the headwaters of a stream serve as the starting point for something that becomes much larger, the projects of the Headwaters Heritage Initiative test potential conservation solutions that may later become the foundation for state or national policies.

Through this initiative we fund, direct and implement projects that demonstrate on-the-ground conservation that is science-driven and collaborative by design.

Our Headwaters Heritage Projects:

  • ORGANIZING CLIMATE FUTURES FORUMS - focused on pilot watersheds in Oregon and California in a collaborative effort with the Climate Leadership Initiative (University of Oregon) and the Pacific Northwest Research Station

  • RESTORING FREEWAYS FOR FISH – an ambitious campaign to restore access to fish habitat across 1,200 miles of the Rogue River Basin by 2008

  • KLAMATH RIVER HYDROELECTRIC DAM RELICENSING – working with other conservation organizations, agencies, tribes, local governments, and PacifiCorp to assess the impacts of Klamath River dams and develop measures to offset or eliminate these impacts on fish, aquatic habitat, and water quality

Overheard...

Any river is really the summation of the whole valley.   To think of it as nothing but water is to ignore the greater part. -  Hal Borland - This Hill, This Valley
