In the climate change world, "adaptation" is the act of preparing for or coping with the impacts of a changing climate.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) defines adaptation as the "adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities" (IPCC, 2007) .
Another term we use for "adaptation" is “readiness.” It's a simpler term that promotes the sense that our individual and collective actions can truly make a difference, despite the accelerating impacts we face.
Both terms invite us to "get ready" and "adapt" to the impacts of a changing climate.
